Salt Lake City, Utah - On May 2, 2001 EarthFax Engineering, Inc. (“EarthFax”), in association with Chevron Pipe Line Company and EPA Region VIII, presented a case study of an inland oil spill response to the Rocky Mountain Hazardous Materials Association (“RMHMA”). The case study was presented during the 21st annual RHMA training and education seminar held in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The spill site presented in the study was a refined product pipeline located in a transitional wetlands zone near the north shore of the Great Salt Lake. The cause of the spill was a pinhole-sized leak in the pipeline that had released approximately 4200 gallons of diesel fuel into the environment.
The case study presented emergency response activities implemented by EarthFax and Chevron at the spill site in northern Utah and included a discussion of site history, site conditions at the time of the spill, first responder measures, safety measures, emergency response environmental engineering measures, personnel tasks and responsibilities, communication, environmental preservation during response activities, and regulatory compliance. Two unique aspects of emergency response activities at the site were given particular focus during the presentation of the case study: low impact methods of responding to pipeline leaks in wetlands and transitional wetland zones, and successful implementation of controlled burn activities as a remediation technology.
